What is the best time to take magnesium?

Take magnesium with food to maximise absorption. For sleep, anxiety, and cramps: take glycinate 30–60 minutes before bed. For energy and blood sugar: take citrate or malate with breakfast. For doses over 400 mg: always split.

Timing by goal

Sleep / anxiety / restless legs: glycinate, 30–60 minutes before bed.

Energy / fatigue / fibromyalgia: malate, with breakfast.

Constipation / general repletion: citrate, with dinner or split breakfast + dinner.

Blood pressure / heart: taurate, evening with dinner.

Splitting the dose

Any dose above 400 mg elemental should be split. Absorption per dose plateaus around 250 mg, so splitting both improves uptake and prevents loose stools.

Frequently asked

On an empty stomach or with food?
With food — improves absorption and reduces nausea.
Can I take it with coffee?
Coffee mildly reduces absorption. Wait 30 minutes between.
Complementary nutrients

What else the research pairs with magnesium for sleep.

Sleep after 50 is rarely about one nutrient. These are the EFSA-authorised functions most commonly discussed together in the evening protocol.

Magnesium

Contributes to normal muscle function & reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

The MagVitaal focus — glycinate form most studied for evening use.

Vitamin D3 + K2

D3 contributes to normal muscle function; K2 contributes to maintenance of bones.

Often the missing piece in restless-legs and cramp conversations.

Creatine

Increases physical performance in short, high-intensity bursts (3 g/day).

Daytime dose. Better daytime energy is often the quiet lever on evening recovery.
