Should I take magnesium with vitamin D?
Yes. Every step of vitamin D activation in the body โ from liver to kidney to tissues โ requires magnesium as a cofactor. Taking high-dose vitamin D without adequate magnesium can deplete magnesium further and blunt D's benefits.

The biochemistry
Vitamin D3 must be converted to 25(OH)D in the liver and then to active 1,25(OH)2D in the kidney. Both conversions, plus the activity of vitamin D-binding protein, depend on magnesium.
This is why some people 'don't respond' to vitamin D โ they are magnesium-depleted.
Practical protocol
1000โ2000 IU vitamin D3 + 200โ400 mg elemental magnesium daily with the largest meal. Add vitamin K2 (MK-7, 90โ180 mcg) for bone and arterial health.
Frequently asked
- Can I take them at the same time?
- Yes โ same meal is fine and often improves absorption of both.
- What about vitamin K2?
- K2 directs calcium to bones rather than arteries; pairs well with D3 + magnesium.
